Replicate VxVM / CFS volumes

Hello all,

We have a SGeRAC/CFS cluster (2 nodes) on HP-UX 11v2. We'd like to replicate the volumes containing the database to a remote site (EMC storage) and use it as a cold backup / disaster recovery.

The DR site is a single node without SG nor CFS and only VxVM 5 Base (no full license). Can we go with this config or do we need anything else ?

I suppose that mounting the volumes / file systems should be straightforward on the DR site, right ?

Thanks.

Re: Replicate VxVM / CFS volumes

BTW, how r u going to replcate, SRDF??

Are you using VxVM as volume manager or LVM?

I have not see an base 5 with 11.23 so far. can you post o/p of "vxlicrep"( rmeove the LIcense key from o/p)

If the file system is a normal vxfs file system from MCSG you should be able to import or mount them on 11.23 server w/o issues.

Re: Replicate VxVM / CFS volumes

Hello,

Here is the dump from the DR site
root@arris3:/ >#vxlicrep

Symantec License Manager vxlicrep utility version 3.02.16.0
Copyright (C) 1996-2006 Symantec Corporation. All rights reserved.

Product Name = VERITAS File System
Serial Number = 1
License Type = PERMANENT
OEM ID = 4095

Features :=
HP_OnlineJFS = Enabled

CPU Count = Not Restricted
Platform = HP-UX
Version = 3.5
Maximum number of file systems = Not Restricted

Attached is the license file from the main site.

We have VxVM 5 indeed on all systems, we have asked for it :
root@arris3:/ >#swlist | grep -i vxvm
Base-VxVM-50 B.05.00.02 Base VERITAS Volume Manager Bundle 5.0 for HP-UX

We are using VxVM for the database volumes as they are clustered with SG/CFS.

Thanks.

Re: Replicate VxVM / CFS volumes

first questionis how are you replicating the data
SRDF??

If using SRDF you can go ahead and do it without any issue with whatever licence you have.

Rsync would also be fine.

Re: Replicate VxVM / CFS volumes

Hello,

Thanks for your answer. We are going to use SRDF. So far we have cloned the disks to have a try but did not succeed to import the disks on the DR site.

Thanks.

Re: Replicate VxVM / CFS volumes

If you list, here is what you have :
root@arris3:/ >#vxdisk list
DEVICE TYPE DISK GROUP STATUS
c0t8d0 auto:LVM - - LVM
c0t10d0s2 auto:LVM - - LVM
c6t10d3 auto - - error
c6t10d4 auto - - error
c6t10d5 auto - - error
c6t10d6 auto - - error
c6t10d7 auto - - error
c6t11d0 auto - - error
c6t11d1 auto - - error
c6t11d2 auto - - error
c6t11d3 auto - - error

If you try this :
root@arris3:/ >#vxdisk online c6t10d3
VxVM vxdisk ERROR V-5-1-531 Device c6t10d3: online failed:
Device path not valid

Of course the disk is there :
root@arris3:/ >#ioscan -fnC disk | grep c6t10d3
/dev/dsk/c6t10d3 /dev/rdsk/c6t10d3

Re: Replicate VxVM / CFS volumes

Hello,

It's a license problem.
The VxVM is using the DMP which is a feature enabled by the full license from Veritas.

After disabling multipathing on all disks, I managed to see the disks online and the DG, they belonged too.

Now, the problem is that the system sees the paths as disks on their own and importing DG is impossible.

Does anyone have a cluse about bypassing the problem ?

Thanks.

Re: Replicate VxVM / CFS volumes

can u import with disk list, but only one path for each LUN

Re: Replicate VxVM / CFS volumes

Hi,

Yes indeed, I have disabled DMP first then disabled the second path for each disk and managed to import DGs and mount FSs.

Do you suggest any other way that might be easier ?

Thanks.

Re: Replicate VxVM / CFS volumes

There is only two way to import; one with vgid(which picks all paths if masked to host) and other with disk list.

Re: Replicate VxVM / CFS volumes

Hi,

Looks like the VxVM without license is useless.
Anyhow, I had to disable multipathing and mask the second path of each disk and then it worked fine.
