Re: Report forums issues! [1/2]

I recieve 404 errors as well, Once in a while after I get a 404 or other message, I get a message that pop's up that asks if I would like to repost from data, I click yes and it hangs a bit then refreshes.

I'm new to the fourm, and not sure if you do anything like this already. I've noticed for X amount of points you get a cool little Icon, well in the business world that's not much you can boast about or put on a resume. Maybe a certificate, or something would be a nice thing to get for those that put hours into this thing. Something that we could use just to show how much better we are at what we do?

Just a though.

keep up the good work on the forum..

Re: Report forums issues! [1/2]

If I start ITRC forum either on my profile page or the forum selection page, then attempt to login, I get CAN'T DISPLAY PAGE error.

Also If I have not logged on and select REPLY on a topic, I use to get the login screen, login, then enter my reply. Now I get the CAN'T DISPLAY PAGE error.

Do I have some bad cookies or something?

Re: Report forums issues! [1/2]

Hi all,

what a great job, thanks a lot for your valuable contribution!

Let me give you more visibility on the actions taken to solve some of the reported issues:

It looks like 'SSI' and 'http404' errors are the top issues experienced within the forums. After investigation, it appears that both are caused by performance issues on forums servers. Thanks to your replies, developers now have a whole list of examples to illustrate the issue. This will help us identify the exact reasons for the issues and allow us to efficiently work on fixing them.

A third issue I will track is the one reported by Mark Vollmers and Richard Darling: in some cases, after having logged in, there is something wrong with the display, links are missing, font is much bigger,...
This issue was already reported some time ago. After investigation, it appears that this problem happens whenever one tries to log in after having entered a forums category, and not from the home page.
As a workaround,
- get first to the forums home page
- log in before accessing categories
- now you can access the forums with the right display

A bug was spotted by some of you who tried to access previously moved messages. As an explanation, if we feel that a question was posted to a wrong family of questions, we sometimes will move the entire thread to a more appropriate family. This will leave a message in the original category with a link to the new thread location. It appears that for some time now, all such messages contain broken links leading to a '404' error.
To minimize the impact, we decided not to move any further message from one family to another until the issue is fixed. This unfortunately won't fix issues linked to previously moved messages.

I also submitted the virus issue reported by Jim Donovan and Rita Workman for investigation. Rita, I really feel sorry for you! I will do my best to make sure that no further virus infects the community. I am not too sure of the solutions that can be applied to avoid this in the future.

The javascript errors - thanks, Volker - seem to be happening on certain browsers/platform combinations, as I could never reproduce the problem myself. I submitted it anyway.

In the future - thanks again, Jim! - other solutions to report issues and propose enhancements to forums will surely be implemented. Your proposal for new forums dedicated to such discussions sounds very good. Thanks for sharing your visions of the future, you really help us design the solutions that meet your needs.

Again, we appreciate your participation in the ITRC forums. Do not hesitate to submit further issues, clarify some points or propose enhancements. Thanks to all of you for helping build a positive user community!

Best regards,
Laurent

Re: Report forums issues! [1/2]

I usually have issues with the forums when I am logged on to a different system and am just parsing through the forums, I get to a forum that I want to reply to, hit reply, it tells me that I need to login because I don't normally use that system and once I login, it returns me to the forums but the leftmost column that has all of the options in it(eg, search, online help, contact hp, etc.) disappears. If I do a refresh/reload on the page it fixes it, but I have had it do that to me on many occasions. Just something you may want to look into.

Re: Report forums issues! [1/2]

Hi
The problem that frstrates me the most is that I constantly get logged out. While I can still use the forum, I have to relog in to respond to my own messages or to assign points.

It seems to be very sporatic, like it is right now... I logged on, got into the forum, then when I get into a message, I am logged out. Return to the main menu, I am logged in. I got into this message and I am still logged in.

Good Luck,
JLS

Re: Report forums issues! [1/2]

I'd like to be able to track what questions I haven't given points to yet..
I see I have 3 unassigned but don't know which?
Is there any way?

Recently too I forgot my password.. now
credit to HP they replied in less than 1 day
but I noticed that it was impossible to
discover my password without knowing my login..
I forgot that too! Why is it not possible to
recover a password just by entering in email
addy?

Re: Report forums issues! [1/2]

Hi Larent,

Thanks for all you and the folks there hard work.
Now for my problem...Well, I used to be able to get on the Forums and login from home. Lately (again this past weekend) once again I can get to the Forums, but I can not get logged in. It kept coming up saying it could not find the page and suggested checking my Internet Options (which I haven't changed..). Nothing I tried seemed to work, so I made sure I had everything set back the way it was....
Oh well, don't know if you can figure this one out. But I'd really like to respond to the site on nights and weekends.

Anyway, thanks again !!

working on win95 with netscape 6, I can not assign points to contributors.
Such a problem is also in the SUM area, when trying to go to another system handle.
Good luck!

Re: Report forums issues! [1/2]

Laurent,

Since no one has brought this up in this thread yet, I guess I will be the bad guy this time.

It appears that there is some dissention in the Forums ranks due to the lack of point assignments. Today, there are very few posts with that have a "Magic Answer". I do not know if this is due to some of the newer users not understanding the concept of the points, although I don't know how you could make it any clearer since the points explanation comes up when you post a question, or if there is something else. I think part of the problem is the mechanism that is currently used to assign points. This mechanism is terribly cumbersome and time consuming. When you have to click the "assign points" button for each response, then assign the points, click submit, then get thanked for assigning points, and then go back to the question so you can through the whole process for the next response, that can take a while if there are more than 3 or 4 responses to your question.

I think a hard look needs to taken at the whole point assignment process. The ability to assign points to any number of responses to your question at once would be very welcome. I don't know if that would make more people assign points to responses to their questions or not, but I don't think it can make it any worse.

I can't say that I am immune to the points issue. It can be a bit irritating when I put a few minutes work into a post and then I never know if it helped the person or not. At this point this problem is not keeping me from posting, as I do enjoy at least trying to help everyone out. If things continue as they currently are, I can't say that the frequency that I post won't drop.

Re: Report forums issues! [1/2]

Laurent,

Sorry for the second post, but I also wanted to say that I agree with Bill McNamara in that there is a need to be able to see which of the questions I have posted have responses that don't have points assigned.

Ten seconds later i was able to go to that page without a problem.

Hi,

this morning I received some 404's when I tried to log in. Directly entering the forums without logging in was no problem however.
Afterwards no problems anymore.

Re: Report forums issues! [1/2]

Absolutely slower than normal today, took 33 seconds to load the problem and 23 to load this response page. Also got 2 404's before the page would load.
I see that there are multiple duplicate replies, this is probably caused by the 404's also.
I was paging thru the forum pages yesterday to test response and was getting between 23 and 40 seconds to generate a page.
Lately, I have been hitting refresh to reload the updated problems and go off to email or mainframe access while waiting for the response to return.
Human train of thought normally requires a response in 5 to 10 seconds at the longest.

Re: Report forums issues! [1/2]

I was also getting 404 errors and timeouts in both Netscape and IE. I then tried turning of my Proxy settings and it now seems to work fine in both browsers. I don't know if this is a proxy configuration error, or just that proxies are more sensitive to slow servers.

Also, the formatting in Netscape (4.76) is not correct. Long lines (for example, in this thread) do not wrap as they do in IE.
