Reported a size of zero to install HP-UX 10.20
I'm trying to install an HP-UX 10.20 on an HP workstation model 9000/778/B180L in a HD from Seagate ST118273 18 GB, but at the beginning of the installation when the message "Scanning system for IO devices ..." and "Querying disk device 8/0/19/0/4/0" getting the message "reported a size of zero, the installation is failing to identify the size of the disk, the disk is identified but no size. The HD is new and was working perfectly on another workstation.
Some friends have any tips on how to make the installation to recognize the size of the HD?
Grateful.

How can it be "new" if it "was working [...]
on another workstation"?
Apparently it was working _before_ you
installed where it is now. What happens if
you put it back where it was?
A bad SCSI cable/terminator/adapter could
explain this. (It _is_ SCSI, right?
"ST118273" leaves out some details.)

Re: Reported a size of zero to install HP-UX 10.20
What was the other workstation and how was it connected and used? There are a few things to keep in mind about the BL180 workstations.
When the BL180 workstations came about, the hard disk sizes were at most 4GB. It is possible that the workstation can not recognize the drivebecause of the drive size. In addition to the size of the drive, early HP workstations and servers did not recognize any non HP disk drives.
And the BL180s used both FWD and SE SCSI controllers and hence disks. Ensure that you are not connecting the disk to the wrong SCSI bus type.

I've never tried using a wrong bus type, but
I'd guess that if the drive is seen at all,
it's not the wrong SE/DIFF type.

That is one of those (pesky) details.
ST118273N, ST118273W, ST118273WC, ST118273WD,
... -- All different. Often incompatible.

Re: Reported a size of zero to install HP-UX 10.20
As for the cables and connection type FWD, SE SCSI, I'm sure everything's OK, I'm connecting the HD to the bus Ultra Wide SCSI-SE Workstation.
Last week follow the same procedure but with an HD of 36.4 Gb IBM and the installation process occurred in a normal, recognized this HD Workstation without problems, then I believe that should even be a problem of incompatibility between brands. Wonder, there is a possibility in this case to manually configure the geometry of HD through the file disktab? If possible could give me a hint?
Thank you for your attention.

Re: Reported a size of zero to install HP-UX 10.20
That pretty well rules out 18GB being too
big.
> [...] incompatibility between brands.
Possible but not likely. An "IBM" disk could
be made by Hitachi, IBM, or Seagate.
Possibly others. As before, an actual model
number might be interesting.
It still sounds to me like a hardware
problem. I'd try another disk. If that
works, I'd try this one again. If not, I'd
try a different cable. Or a different
computer. A poor cable connection could
cause this sort of thing, too, even if the
cable is ok.
> [...] manually configure the geometry [...]
A modern SCSI disk doesn't really have a
"geometry" the way an old disk did. It has
blocks, but the underlying structure is
pretty well hidden. (More sectors per
cylinder near the outside, for example.)

Re: Reported a size of zero to install HP-UX 10.20
what is the date code of the media you are using? you need at least a version with the ACE bundle and from June 99.
The size definatly isnt the issue, ive installed 72g disk is the b180's.
you do need to check that the scsi bus type is correect as steven stated. What is the disk exactly?
Just becasuse the disk was working doesnt mean it is now? try it in another machine and see if you can format it? was it part of a funny sort of raid set? what was the ibm machine?
Also check the f/w version of the workstation from PDC
MA>in fv
latest is 6.1
this could be the difference between your workstations
