reset root password

Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the correct forum but I need a procedure in reseting root password for DigitalUnix. No one remembers the password and I have never rebooted any DEC server before. Wonder how do I get to PROM monitor to issue:
>>>boot -fl s - to get into single user mode and issue :
#/sbin/bcheckrc - to check & mount f/system
#passwd - to reset the root passwd

Again, how do I get to PROM monitor, or the >>> ? What key to press during booting and when to press as well.

Pls. advise.

Thank you.

Re: reset root password

Follow the prompts for single user mode.

Hope to heck single user mode is not protected.

Type the passwd command.

Make sure you don't forget it again.

Re: reset root password

# consvar -l

to list the value of all variable set in console.

check the value specified for the variable,

"auto_action".

If it is set to halt, system halts at system console when rebooted or switched on.

Hope i am correct.
