reset with full / filesystem

I had an ealier post regarding a system reset and was told that a sync will take place. I now find out from the customer that the reset was performed because the / filesystem filled and they could not log in to free up space. Will the sync operation complete properly, that is, will it skip the full filesystem and complete the sync on the rest of the filesystems? I'm trying to explain why files on another filesystem are corrupted.

Re: reset with full / filesystem

Mark,

I just went out and looked at my rp7410 - I can't find a "reset" button so I'm not sure what they actually did. That makes it a little difficult to predict the results.

The only reset I'm aware of is in the MP command list. It will reboot the machine. If the machine is up and running when it's reset, there will be no graceful shutdown and, since there is no power off in the process, there will (probably) not be any automatic syncing of discs.

Re: reset with full / filesystem

You could have files corrupted all over the place depending on what applications and processes were running at the time. If there was a database of any sort and the power switch was turned off, then there is the possibility that you could corrupt database files.

The same could be said for any other application or system files.

Just because a disk sync occurrs does not necessarily guarantee that there will not be any corrupted files.

Re: reset with full / filesystem

I made another inquiry (I'm not getting my info firsthand) and now (this is like peeling an onion) I'm being told that they entered a command to reset. This is making more sense now. Thanks for the help.

Re: reset with full / filesystem

Well, it depends on what command they did to do the reset.

If they were at the console and did a CTRL-B to get to GSP (or the rp7410 equivalent) and from there did an RS, then you are still facing the same scenario.

An RS still does not do a graceful shutdown. You are essentiall pulling the rug out from under HP-UX's feet. I don't think an RS does a sync, but I could be mistaken.
