Resetting an internal modem.

What are the steps that are taken at the console to reset an internal modem in an HP9000 D330.
It's not the strength of the gales, it's how you set your sails.

normally the only way to reset a hung internal modem is to reboot the system :(

Re: Resetting an internal modem.

however this maybe applicable .....

My HP Support Link modem seems to be hung. How can I reset it?

RESOLUTION

Try to kill the process to respawn the getty/uugetty.

Do an fuser against the port, to see if a process is holding the port
open.

Verify all hardware connections to the modem.

If the above steps do not work, then it depends on the type of system
you have.

For K/D series(internal):
Connect to the modem and issue an AT&D3
If this doesn't work, then the system will need to be shutdown with a -h
power cycled and restarted.

For N/L Class(for the :
Issue a ^B(controlB) to get into the GSP mode.
GSP>MR (modem reset)
If this doesn't work, then the system will need to be shutdown and
power cycled and restarted.

If you don't like the idea of having to potentially reboot the system if
the internal modem hangs, an external modem may be a better alternative.

EXPLAINATION:

The support modem on the HP "SERVER" series is provided so that the HP
Predictive Support Software can alert your HP Customer Engineer of
possible hardware events that need his/her attention. You should be
aware of the fact that if you disable the modem or reconfigure it,
your Predictive Software will not be able to use the modem and alert
your HP-CE of possible hardware related problems. With this in mind,
you may want to consider adding an additional modem on another port for
remote system administration activities. Most high speed modems can be
used on other Modem (MDP or ADP) Mux ports and the Response Center can
provide limited configuration information for many of them.
The support modems supplied with the Hewlett Packard server-series are
ONLY to be used for remote console access and or HP Predictive Support.
Any other intended use of the internal modem is NOT SUPPORTED by the
Hewlett Packard Response Center. This includes any getty process,
kermit, or uucp.

Re: Resetting an internal modem.

If you are able to connect to the modem and the Hayes command set is used, AT&Z I believe is the command. AT&V I believe will produce output that will list the valid commands.

Re: Resetting an internal modem.

Richard:

I've always bit the bullet and rebooted, as necessary. If you are using the modem as a dial-in device, especially if someone is pushing files onto the server through it, then it's likely to become hung. I personally configure the internal modem for dialout only; using it for Predictive Support only.

Re: Resetting an internal modem.

Just a quick comment, rebooting the server is not usually sufficient. You have to actually power cycle the server to reset the internal modem.

Richard:

John is absolutely correct!!! I should have said "cycle-power" and not simply "boot". Afterall, who wants to waste time!!!
