All this is as expected but my question is how can I get the new LV back?
If necessary I can restore a copy of /etc from a time after I created the new LV.

Re: resore LV after ignite recovery
An Ignite make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery is supposed to back up all VG configuration information, even for volume groups not included in the backup.
What I do is a vgexport -p -m
to a mapfile to preserve vg/lv names prior to any work.
You should be able to do a vgimport on the new volume group, because all the relavent information for the volume group except volume group configuration should be able to be pulled from the disk(s) that were part of the volume group.
It would be interesting to know what version of Ignite you used and whether the volume group in question existed when you did your Ignite backup.

Re: resore LV after ignite recovery
the Ignite backup did backup all the VG information. My problem is that I added the new LV the day after I took the Ignite backup.
I know that the data is physically on the disk, I just need to get it reconfigured into the VG now that I have restored the OS from the Ignote backup.

SolutionWas it the only LV in the VG? Are there device files present for the VG? For the LV? I think that's all your missing is the device files and you should be able to re-create them using mkdir and mknod for the VG and mksf for the LV.

Re: resore LV after ignite recovery
all is now well. There were other LVs in the VG. While looking in /dev/vg02 I noticed that a new device file for lvol10 (which had not previously existed) had been created last night during the restore. I mounted a file system on this new LV and my data magically appeared.
I guess that the restore detected a new LV in the VG and created the device file using the default naming convention (I used a different name). I have added an entry to /etc/fstab and it now looks good.
Thanks for your help.
