Restore from Ignite

I have an ignite backup tape and I want to restore certain file from it. I am just kinda confused about the pathname to specify, the command to restore a file called ignite.date located in directory /DR/Ignite/ignite.date shoul be

tar -xvf /dev/rmt/0mn /DR/Ignite/ignite.date

or

tar -xvf /dev/rmt/0mn DR/Ignite/ignite.date.

The output of tar -tvf /dev/rmt/0mn is as follows:

Judging from your tar -tvf output, you're going to have a hard time restoring something that wasn't backed up.

What command did you use to create this Ignite tape?

/opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -Ava /dev/rmt/0mn -n 5

It appears that all that was backed up was the /stand file system. I generally recommend that you use

make_tape_recovery -a /dev/rmt/0mn -I -x inc_entire=vg00

so that you get the entirety of your root volume group rather than just the subset of files that Ignite thinks are critical.

It doesnt mean that it only has stand in backup, it has other things as well. My question is should I reference to directory as /DR/Ignite or DR/Ignite when specifying in tar command

You need to specify the file exactly as it is stored on tape. As you can see from your brief output, there is NO leading '/' in the names.

So the command to use would be:

tar -xvf /dev/rmt/0mn DR/Ignite/ignite.date

Don't forget to do a:

mt -f /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 1

to space forward over the boot area at the beginning of the tape before you do your restore.
