Restoring Logical Volumes from a CD restore

Hi,
I moved this issue to the Ignite section.
I am backing up a system using Ignite and restoring it from CD. To create/restore the images, I am using make_sys_image for the first CD and gtar for the rest. During the restore of the first CD, I noticed that only the logical volumes on the first CD are retained. When I attempt to load the 2nd CD, it writes it to the / volume and eventually I run out of disk space.
In an attempt to solve this problem, I kept the logical volumes and the filesystem on the first CD, but put all of the other files in make_sys_image (Level_2_NORESET)ex. /COTS/file1, etc. On the first CD, I left /COTS/lost+found (and all other logical volumes in this manner that would not fit on the first CD). I commented out the /etc/lvmtab and /etc/lvmconf entries in make_sys_image.
I have also added an entry in os_arch_post_l to extend the logical volumes and the filesystems. This produced the error "cannot find the logical volume" or "logical volume is mounted; cannot extend.."

A third piece of information - When I examined the .impacts file, the sizes are very different from the results of bdf (KB vs. MB and much smaller).
It ws recommended that I save and restore my logical volumes. How do I do this if I am just using make_sys_image and writing teh images to CD?

Thanks for any information.

Re: Restoring Logical Volumes from a CD restore

I suggest instead make_sys_image and CD, try to setup ignite server and use make_net_recovery. If you have local tape drive then the best method would be make_tape_recovery.

Refer to the following knowledge tree doc.

Re: Restoring Logical Volumes from a CD restore

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, that is not an option. I have a military mandate to make this work on CD. Is there any thing else that I might try?

Thanks.

Jan, I know the mandate is CD - are they willing to think about using DVD instead? It would solve the problem of 1st vs second disk...

Re: Restoring Logical Volumes from a CD restore

DVD is also not an option. I have been looking at some old code (on a 10.20 OS)that was used when disks were small (2.1GB) and a second disk had to be mounted. It looks like they used a minimal set of logical volumes (/stand. swap and /) and in the Rel_B.10.20/config file, there is a provision to do add logical volumes.

I'm not that experienced with scripting, so it's kind of cryptic. If you see anything like that in the 11.00 version that would get the job done, would you let me know?

Thanks alot.
