.rhosts/hosts.equiv question

Gentlemen,

a tough question for you.
Recently I installed 6 B2000's in a network. I used NIS-netgroups in the /etc/hosts.equiv and in the .rhosts in the /-dir. The B2000's were set in the NIS-domain. I can now login from any station to another without having to provide the root-password. However the B2000-3 cannot login to other stations without root being asked for his password. Every other station can login onto the B2000 without any questions.

The strange things are : I used an image of the B2000-3 to create the B2000-1,2,4,5,6 and all those clones work without any problem.
When I change the .rhosts and /etc/hosts.equiv (by the way : its read, write permissions are the same as those on any other workstation) to contain only the b2000-3 on eg. the b2000-1...then it still does NOT work. The other way around : putting only the b2000-1 in those two files on the b2000-3 then the b2000-1 root can login without being prompted for a password.

I then installed the latest NFS/NIS Cumulative megapatch : PHNE_21375 : however...it still didn't work.

I then used the image of that b2000-3 (the same I used on the other B2000) to reinstall the b2000-3, but guess what.... it still does not work.

I must be missing something... an IP conflict ? Would be strange since the system boots and works properly... it does not appear to be anything with NIS as even the input of the hostnames (or IPs) in the .rhosts and /etc/hosts.equiv does not work.

I am truly baffled about this thing...

Any suggestions are welcome,
Jeroen Demets.

Re: .rhosts/hosts.equiv question

(FYI)
Don't bother to look further...

apparently my deduction of "no IP-conflict" was wrong...

using nslookup name and nslookup ip gave me the hint that another station was using that IP.

Restarting the DNS-daemons resulted in a happy rlogin process.

Re: .rhosts/hosts.equiv question

Any differences in the /etc/hosts or DNS entries? Are all systems nsswitch-ed the same?

I'm thinking the resolution of the hostname is at the root of your problem.

Re: .rhosts/hosts.equiv question

For the record ... my reply was posted just a few minutes ago; but there were no other replies when I pulled up the question.

At first I just thought the three of us posted at roughly the same time. But the time stamps show that is not the case.

Another "ghost in the machine" at the Forums?
