Root almost full

We have an hpux server, whose root partition is too small around 204 MB. It is 97% full, there is some space available in the vg00, can i simply increase the logical volume hosting the root file system and then the root file system.

Hi,

It is not possible to increase the root filesystem straight away because of contigious allocation policy. The only preferred and recommanded way is take ignite backup and restore with modified LV sizes.

To increase the file system / , is necessary that you have installed a JFS online, if you don't have, it is not possible. because you will need umount the file system.

In order to increase the root filesystem you must use Ignite and reinstall.

NO other way!!

11.11 "/" filesytem uses about 142MB start looking for files to cleanup !!


Post your du -sk output for /etc, /dev, /sbin

Increase root filesystem isnt´ possible, see Ganesan reply. Maybe, to minimize the problem, create a new independent filesystem called "/etc/lvmconf_new" to move the actual "/etc/lvmconf".
1 - lvcreate -L 512 /dev/vg00
2 - mkfs -F vxfs /dev/vg00/name_lvol_of_item_1
3 - mkdir /etc/lvmconf_new
4 - mount /dev/vg00/name_lvol_of_item_1 /etc/lvmconf_new
5 - cd /etc/lvmconf
6 - mv * /etc/lvmocnf_new
7 - cd /
8 - umount /etc/lvmocnf_new
9 - mount /dev/vg00/name_lvol_of_item_1 /etc/lvmconf

The problem isn't with the filesystem - it's with the underlying logical volume. The root filesystem needs to be contiguous for it to be bootable - which means if you wanted to extend it there'd need to be free physical extents right at the end of the logical volume - which there probably isn't (you can check that with pvdisplay -v /dev/dsk/cXtYdZ for the disk(s) in your root VG)

Probably easier to figure out why its got so full by looking for files of 10MB and over as a starting point:

find / -size +10000000c -xdev -exec ll {} \;

There really shouldn't be many big files in / so have a look at what that produces and consider deleting non-system files.

Moving /etc/lvmconf to another logical volume is a *dumb* idea...

So I get some corruption in my vg00 VGRA header and want to restore it. I can't get to single user or multi-user mode as the VG won't activate, so I go to LVM maintenance mode where all I have available is the root partition. If I moved lvmconf data somwehere else I can never recover my VGRA.

Here is what mine looks like.

You can review /etc and cleanup about 20MB

Please respond to Torsten's question on the unknown directories and if they are part of root.

Review directories under "/" that are NOT filesystem mount points !!!

DR_venus is a directory where we keep DR information that is backed up part of ignite process, and the other /scripts/sap/prd has some SAP scripts which the basis admin uses for R3 maintenance and administration.

The other file looks like an EMC PowerPath Migration Enabler logfile. I'm guessing at some point in the past this system has been through a PowerPath upgrade.

Assuming the file is not in use (check with fuser), I think you can safely move/backup that file and truncate to 0.

I'd keep looking for other large files in / by adjusting the value of the "size" in the find command down to 5MB, 1MB etc. and see what other junk you turn up.
