Re: root connection failure
If you can not login into the console a reset is the only option left.

Re: root connection failure
Does your system recently rebooted.
If it is.......
Okay , Try to login as single user mode.
If you are not able to login , there is some problem in root filesystems. You may need to execute fsck on these filesystems in single user mode.

Re: root connection failure
You have to correct problem with the Console of the server because it seems that it is the only way you can get into the server.
Just check out for COnsole connections, power cycle the console terminal and try to see the Login promt!!!

Re: root connection failure
If you are using HP terminal as console,
make sure remote mode is set (*).
If remote mode is disabled, it will simply
echo what you type on the keyboard.

Re: root connection failure
Either you have forgotten the passwd or somebody by mistake changed it.
In that case, you need to plan for downtime, reboot the server.
Halt it at pdc prompt.
Main Menu>bo
Interact with IPL --> y
ISL>hpux -is
this will take you to single user mode without prompting for password.
after you see # prompt simply change the password.
# passwd
New Password:
#shutdown -r -y 0
Allow it to boot to normal multiuser level and see if it works. It should!!!

Re: root connection failure
Only option is to boot it into single user mode when possible and as explained above.
You should take 15/20 min off for this activity.
All the best

Re: root connection failure
find processes running on console
(ps -tconsole) and kill them.
Possibly other than getty some thing else
also be running.
After killing all the processes, check getty
is running again. Then try from console.
If this doesn't solve your problem some thing
wrong with the terminal itself. Reset to
factory defaults and comminication settings
to match the current getty values.
If you can connect through telnet with same
password, I don't think rebooting in single
user mode and resetting password will help!!
Or simply try a reboot without resetting
password.

Re: root connection failure
If so, power it off, depress the D key, and while continuing to keep the D key depressed power the terminal back on. After a few seconds it should beep, release the D key, an dthe terminal should display a meesage about using defaults.
See if you can now get a logion to work.

Re: root connection failure
Reset the console to its defaults.
Or go into the configuration and echo is set to on. Reset it to off. Save configuration and try again.
Best solution is to reset the terminal to its configuration defaults.
