Re: Root file system is full

Thanx for all of your help, but I have fixed the problem.

I was unable to log into any account on this box, however, I was able to remsh over to the box and I noted a 270MB core file in the root directory. Once I deleted it, all was well..

Thanx.

Re: Root file system is full

Eran, I don't understand your idea.
Michael, try to remove some files by ftp.
if you cannot, then try to remsh your system from another with rexec.

good luck.

Re: Root file system is full

You got lucky. Had you been unable to remsh/rlogin to the box whose root filesystem was full, you would have had much more difficulty resolving this problem. I suggest you look at how many free partitions exist on the disk that your rootvg filesystems are defined. If there are free partitions, look at the utilization of your rootvg filesystems and see if there is enough free space in each (80% used is a good benchmark). If sufficient free partitions exist, add the least number of partitions to each rootvg filesystem to make sure its utilization does not exceed 80%. This should lower the risk of filling up any rootvg filesystem in the future. Also, it is good to monitor the free space on local filesystems periodically. A root crontab script can issue bdf and use awk to identify critical shortages of free space and email the responsible Sys Admins when these shortages occur.

Re: Root file system is full

All things considered, in this particular environment, where I'm pretty much the new kid on the block, I noted that on several systems, the root f/s is pretty small... Of course endeavors to allevaite these kinds of problems are on the horizon...

Thanks for your comments...

Re: Root file system is full

On a side note-

I realize that there might be reasons to keep the core file when it is dumped, but when it gets so large, it can really cause problems. We have created a folder called core and put it in / This prevents a core file from being placed there and filling up the space. just an idea for prevention.
