Root password fails

If I change the root password and try to log in using that password it fails. Could the password file be corrupt if this only happens for root? Also, we are running HP-UX 11.0. What does it mean when root appears as #root on all files root owns?

Re: Root password fails

Forget the last part about #root. It was in the password file.

Re: Root password fails

Hi,
Im not sure I understood the point, are you connected at the console or via a terminal, or term emulator?
is there a /etc/securetty file?
If you are at the console as root and change the passwd, and you fail at the next login, how do you connect yourself?

Re: Root password fails

Okay, next time I'll try to post a better question. I was at a terminal trying to su to root. I created a new user for myself and blew away my old user. Something was wrong in the .profile??? of the old user. I could not su to root. The new user has no problem. I thought maybe the password file may have been currupt somehow. Thanks for trying to help.

Re: Root password fails

use
su - bob
to switch user to the user bob sourcing bobs .profile or equivalent as defined in bobs entry of the /etc/passwd shell line.

An su bob just changes uid.

Bill
It works for me (tm)
