Re: Routine System Check

Check that the system backups have completed
Filesystem size and usage check
log file checking
- /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log
- /var/adm/syslog/mail.log

diagnostic log checking
/etc/rc.log (after system boots)
idle users
print queues
security checks

Many of these tasks can be automated, so writing some good solid scripts can take care of some of these.

general system performance.
get to know the applications that run on your system.
email queues (mailq)
regular ignite tape (or network backup) generation. Always review the print_manifest after running an ignite backup.

Checking your hardware is part of sysadmin these days. So using 'ioscan' and looking for hardware that may have gone elsewhere (NO_HW) in the ioscan output, and familiarising yourself as to what is expected to see in /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log and /var/tomsbstones/tsXX files.

Here's a pretty good summary of tasks:

Re: Routine System Check

Checking the size of filesystems on a regular basis; looking not only for large filesystems but for any that appear to be growing quickly.

Set up a cron job to tidy up the /tmp directory on a weekly basis.
