rp3440 cannot boot from CD

Hello,

Wondering if anyone can shed some light on my situation. I'm trying to use the HP-UX 11i CD on an rp3440 because I have "lost" my /stand/vmunix after my machine failed during an ignite recovery and now I cannot boot the system. I'm wondering if my issue is I'm trying to use an older CD (Dec 2002) than what this server has installed because this is the only version I have on CD. When I try and boot from the CD this is the message I get:

Re: rp3440 cannot boot from CD

My first guess is your install cd id too old. Created before the rp3440 was invented.

Re: rp3440 cannot boot from CD

It looks like you are trying to boot from the host at the end there...You should be booting from the CD.

Do you have any other bootable ignite tapes for this same host?

Re: rp3440 cannot boot from CD

berenda,

I hope you still have /stand/vmunix.prev, so you still able to boot up from backup kernel ?

Re: rp3440 cannot boot from CD

Hi Brenda, looks like you booted from pri disk where your corrupted kernel resides. you may issue instead this single command "sea" only to pick the path of your acess media (cdrom). Take note disks/cdrom are under Random Access Media Device Type and to dinstinguish between these two device, a disks always come with fast/wide scsi device (fwscsi) whereas dvd/cdrom are single-ended scsi device (sescsi). Another thing, Cd usually default to device path ending in 2 (x/x/x.2). I noticed you have alternate disk boot path, if this is the mirror disk of your primary one you may also try to boot from there and copy the vmunix to primary one and switch back again.

Re: rp3440 cannot boot from CD

First you should try to boot your previous kernel /stand/vmunix.prev.

Your install media is simply too old.
You need a newer release.

@Alfredo Adam III:

"a disks always come with fast/wide scsi device (fwscsi) whereas dvd/cdrom are single-ended scsi device (sescsi). Another thing, Cd usually default to device path ending in 2 (x/x/x.2)."

This was probably true in the past (for D- and K-class).

There are no fwscsi drives anymore since years.

On this server the DVD drive is IDE, the hardware path is
0/0/2/0.0.0.0

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: rp3440 cannot boot from CD

When it ask whether to use interactive ISL (initial system load), say yes.
a the ISL prompt, enter

isl>hpux ll --- it will list content of /stand, thus see the filename of alternate kernel and boot it from the alternative ..

Re: rp3440 cannot boot from CD

Thanks for all the responses. I was able to track down the current media for this server and reinstall.
