rp8440 mon will not boot

I have a new 8440. I have created 2 partitions
using parcreate.
I istalled the vpar software.
I created a vpar using:
vparcreate -p vpar0 -a mem::2048 -a cpu:::2 -a io:3/0/0/2/0.6.0:BOOT
When I reboot it stops at the MA main menu. I issue the BO commend. Interact with IPL? yes.
I then enter hpux /stand/vpmon
It sits there for several min. When it does resume it say 10 seconds has expired and boots to /stand/vmunix?

I dont get it.

Thanks

Re: rp8440 mon will not boot

Did you switch the firmware to vPars mode before rebooting? (vparenv -m vPars).

Otherwise, I expect you're still in nPars mode -- and the monitor won't boot in nPars mode.

Re: rp8440 mon will not boot

Isnt vparenv for Itanium?
This is a PA-RISC server

Re: rp8440 mon will not boot

Huh... you're right, of course. Apparently, I've been on way too many IPF only machines lately. Sorry about that -- honestly thought it was common there.

Is there anything before the 10 second expiration? Does "hpux ls" show the vpmon file here?

Re: rp8440 mon will not boot

there seems to be atypo in your vparcreate command:
-a cpu:::2
This should be
-a cpu::2
Or did you just type this incorrectly when opening this thread?
Also, is teh boot path 100% correct?

Re: rp8440 mon will not boot

An ls DOES show vpmon in the /stand directory

I need to check the boot path at the BCH?
Yes that was just a typo.:::2

Re: rp8440 mon will not boot

I think during the looong wait the server restarts again and is doing hardware checks.

Open another session to the MP and watch the VFP.

Boot again to non-vpars env, run "vparstatus -v" and post.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: rp8440 mon will not boot

I would guess you should see some more messages during the boot and end at least at the MON> prompt.

But anyway, IMHO you have a little less I/O resources assigned.

Consider to add some more, e.g. a NIC.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: rp8440 mon will not boot

Here is your solution:

# swlist | grep -i virtual
T1335BC A.04.03.03 HP-UX Virtual Partitions for 11.23

According to the

HP-UX Virtual Partitions Ordering and
Configuration Guide
T1335CC, T1335BC, T1335AC

version A.04.03 is **too old** for your system.

This version does not support the rp8440 - you need at least A.04.04 or better A.04.05 for 11.23.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
