running VNC or Low Bandwidth X11 on HP/UX 11i

I am a sys admin that works from home over a DSL connection that is throttled down to 128k when accessing the corp network through a VPN. Alas, this speed does not allow me to run a full blown X environment as if I were in the office on the LAN.
I have installed RealVNC 4.0 and it 'works' sometimes, but the particular problem I am having involves running the Oracle installer (version 8i, and 10gOAS Forms/Reports). I have yet to get the install session to run to completion. At various times during the process, the installer just "hangs", and I have to kill it, cleanup all of the files, kill the vnc connections and try it again. If I kill the installer program from another window, I get control back on the initial window that I call the installer from. I'm not really sure at this point if this is an HP problem, a VNC problem, or quite possibly an Oracle problem, or combinations thereof.
Also, I read some documentation that mentioned configuring LBX "Low Bandwidth X11 on HPUX" but I cannot locate the technical bulletin "X11KBAN00000369" that is mentioned.
Does anyone out there have similar experience with this type of configuration, or could possible point me in the direction of using something else besides VNC?
I'm desperate and greatly appreciate any/all assistance. Thanks in advance!

I've used Hummingbirds Exceed over 56K to do a full X session and Oracle install. It's slow, but useable. The oracle installer was wigging out on me when my resolution wasn't set properely. Try lowering/raising your resolution on your PC, this sounds weird, but it fixed my issue. I can't remember if there is a text version of the installer that you could use, but that might be an option.

Good luck

I have used VNC with HP-UX.
LBX seems to have been deprecated in favor of
things like forwarding over SSH connections.

I run VNC over SSH with compresion.

VNC runs reasonably well of dial-up, but is
slowish on large changes to screen contents
with high color resolution.

It works better if you use a smaller screen
and smaller color palette. Try 600x800x8.

I also run X on linux, but haven't configured
it to work with HP-UX lately. I have had auth
problems using SSH lately. I haven't needed
it, so I haven't fixed it.

Eric,

I was able to pull up the TKB doc you were interested in (X11KBAN00000369) by selecting " Access the HP-UX Recovery Handbook (requires support contract)" from the "useful links" at the bottom of the main page. The fill in the DocID and select "search by docID" from the pull-down and click on search.

Oops! Wrong link!

Meant to say "Access HP-UX content in the Technical Knowledge Base", not "Recovery Handbook".

Re: running VNC or Low Bandwidth X11 on HP/UX 11i

I tried setting the resolution lower on my XP client (800x600, Medium color) as well as starting the vncviewer with a lower color setting, and it actually worked, but I'm not quite convinced yet that this did the trick. I should probably try several different install sessions to see if I get consistent good results.
I have had the installer complete before with 8i after enough attempts, but I didn't change the resolution or color settings at that time.

I was able to bring up the document X11KBAN00000369 by searching by Doc ID instead of keyword. Duh?
