Samba/CIFS and <newline>

Hello,
HP-UX 11.0, N4000, Samba version 2.0.7
I have 2 questions:
1.- What are the benefits of having CIFS instead of Samba? the HP-Support?
2.- When using Samba to save a file created in a Windows application (Word, Excel, etc.) to a HP-UX filesystem, is there any way to switch from binary to ascii (similar to an ftp session)?
Thanks in advance,
Luis

Re: Samba/CIFS and <newline>

Hello Luis,

The advantage to using CIFS vs. Samba is that HP supports the CIFS package, and includes some extra software with it (Sharity?). I use Samba here and compile it myself, so I can't really talk about using CIFS. Also, I think that CIFS is based on Samba version 2.0.6, while Samba is up to version 2.2.1.

As for the ascii/binary issue, Samba doesn't try to figure out what to do because it is too hard to figure out the right thing to do. Here is a recent post discussing the issue:
