Samba Log Files
Hi there,
We have Samba running on an HP-UX 11.00 machine, and I am getting ready to make the home directories available for mapping to our users running Windows 2000. The encryption setting has been set to yes, and the smbpasswd file has been populated with the appropriate user accounts.
Prior to that I am running a check of the log files and have noticed a large amount of systems, ie: workstations, printers, that appear to be attempting to log onto the system and failing. I'm not sure why this is occurring and I wanted to know if anyone has had a similar situation. If so, could you enlighten me on what is going on and why. Thanks.

Re: Samba Log Files
Have you added the machine to the domain ? If not, you can do this using the smbpasswd binary as follows:
# smbpasswd -j DOMAIN -r PDC
(replacing DOMAIN with your Windows domain name and PDC with the NetBios name of your PDC)
This will create a machine entry for the samba server in your domain, which is necessary when you want to use your Windows PDC for authentication.
# smbpasswd -j DOMAIN -r PDC
(replacing DOMAIN with your Windows domain name and PDC with the NetBios name of your PDC)
This will create a machine entry for the samba server in your domain, which is necessary when you want to use your Windows PDC for authentication.
an engineer's aim in a discussion is not to persuade, but to clarify.

Re: Samba Log Files
PDC=primary domain controller
The solution above works so long as the HP-UX box isn't the primary domain controller. It would seem thats not the case, but its possible to set up.
I'd want to be current on CIFS/Samba prior to doing this, but the command above should work nicely, based on your setup.
Don't be afraid to upload log files, they make diagnosis much easier. If they exceed 1 meg, you can always cut and past the highlight or examples.

Re: Samba Log Files
Hi,
It would be useful to know which version of CIFS or Samba you are running, plus please post a portion of the log file demonstrating the problem.
Are the errors related to problems mapping the Win2k users to their HP-UX equivalents, ie Samba is trying to authenticate against the given Win2k user/password which fails, then they by filling in the user and password request box?
regards,
Darren.
PS: Please also consider allocating points for responses to your questions - it helps other people determine the useful responses and gives recognition to those that have given their time to help.

Calm down. It's only ones and zeros...
