Samba problem/issue

Hello,

HPUX10.20
R390

My samba share does not appear on the Windows Network neighbourhood.

however, if I go to a command prompt on my PC and type net view \\server-name it shows me the shares.

Lastly, if in the same command prompt, I type in net view \\ip address, it returns an Error 5.

Any ideas?

The samba server is probably not registered using WINS or DNS and not appearing in your Network Neighbourhood.

Thanks, however.

What should I explicitly tell the WInblows support people what to register, the hostname or the samba sharename? I think it is the hostname, but I always second guessing these MS support personnel.

If you are using DNS then you need to register the hostname. Then you can give out the complete hostname and sharename to Windows users:

\\yourserver.domain.com\sharename

On top of above mentioned DNS checks, you may consider checking your smb.conf file for correct settings under [global] section. Make sure your system is not local master or uses dns proxy. I assume you have correct workgroup and netbios name.

Windows requires a WINS server when the client and server are not on the same IP subnet. Configure your HPUX SAMBA box to use the WINS server for your company. If unknown open a command prompt on your NT box and run ipconfig /all that will tell you the primary and/or secondary WINS server then feed that address into SAMBA. I use swat to configure samba lately although you could ferret out the smb.conf file and edit that directly. Then stop and start samba to get it registered on your LAN. It may actually take a few minutes to show up on the Window$ boxes when searching network neighborhood.

I have confirmed that the IP address and the hostname (also the netbios name) is in the Windows Wins servers.

I still can not see anything using the net view \\ip address

should both nmbd and smbd be running?

nmbd is the Netbios Name Server and should be running.

An instance of smbd gets started by inetd (see /etc/inetd.conf) whenever a client conects to a share.

If no clients are connected e.g. immediately after a reboot, you wouldn't expect to see any smbd processes.
