Samba Problem

I know many guys use Samba to act as a file server to Windows client.

Dose anyone consider the virus problem? Is there any product have real-time protection against virus running on HP box?

I have tried McAfee virus scan on HP box. But it is not real-time protection and the scanning speed is not fast. Also there are many cons on using that product.

Re: Samba Problem

Well first of all, your HP box, although it is sharing up file space, it itself is not able to be attacked by a virus that plagues MS systems. It's a good idea to have anti-virus software so that other MS boxes don't get infected by openning other MS infected files. It's a better idea to also have your PC's running anti-virus!

Re: Samba Problem

A Unix virus is not easy to create plus in Unix the kernel is memory resident and it is read only. The kernel remains in the memory until the system reboots whereas in Windows the kernel resides on the disk. Usually any virus scanning sfw running on Unix (eg: Linux)
is to protect MS Windows.

Re: Samba Problem

Let me list the point of draw back on using Samba as file server:

1. Virus may spread throuhg Samba mount point if that mount point is shared for a group of users ( eg. /tmp )

2. It is not pratical to assume all clients to have anti-virus installed. ( eg. win 3.1, anti-virus is disabled, virus definition is not update )

3. No real-time virus protection product running on Unix box scanning PC virus. ( If there is one, pls let me know. )

4. Function of virus scanning software running on Unix is limited. ( I have tried McAfee. It can't scan *.zip file! It is unacceptable )

5. Account createion become complicated. ( To create a new account, I have to create a NT account and also a Unix account )

Please give me advice if there is something wrong or any solution available.

PS: I am focusing on PC virus

Re: Samba Problem

I have tried McAfee before but it lacks of real-time protection. Also there is minor problem on this product that is not suitable to me. ( stated in pervious messages )
