SAMBA problem ???

We running SAMBA on HP-UX 11 as a PDC. When Im trying remotly to change the local Administrator password for the workstation (windows 2000 pro), I'm getting an error:
Error 86 : The specified network password is not correct.
It looks like that I don't have Admin (root) rights, that I think I should.
Any idea what went wrong ???

Re: SAMBA problem ???

1) Running Windows 2000 Pro as admin should only be done when you are actually installing software or making configuration changes. Its a security risk, especially if you have internet exposure. In your home, its a security risk if you have a two year old electronics genius, as I have.

2) Changing local admin password on the Windows workstation should have no effect on the samba connection. As far as I know, Samba requires a user id on the HP-UX box to authorize shares, which then work based on Unix filesystem permissions.

3) Authorizing Samba shares for root user connecting from some Windows box is very, very dangerous. If the share provides too much access, you can totally wipe out the HP-UX box.

Here is how we do samba

The share users on the HP-UX box are local users with limited priviledges. The passwords are known to who needs to know them and are rotated frequently with notification to expected users.

My advice is only use root and Admin accounts in their respective environments when required. On W2K, power user is good enough and its almost impossible to wipe out the box as a Power User.
