SAMBA: Stale NFS file handle

Hi,

This appears in my application log:

[Sun Jun 01 06:08:13 GMT+08:00 2003]: 6501: error writing output file java.io.Fi
leNotFoundException: /opt/mssl_mnt/msfs_samba/finance/CIAtoFIN.start (Stale NFS
file handle)
[Sun Jun 01 06:08:13 GMT+08:00 2003]: 5018: An IO error has occurred during appl
ication processing. May be due to error writing output file. Error description:
java.io.FileNotFoundException: /opt/mssl_mnt/msfs_samba/finance/CIAtoFIN.start (
Stale NFS file handle)
[Sun Jun 01 06:08:13 GMT+08:00 2003]: 5018: An IO error has occurred during appl
ication processing. Problem may have occurred while writing output file, or pars
ing XML from message. Error Description: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /opt/mss
l_mnt/msfs_samba/finance/CIAtoFIN.start (Stale NFS file handle)

However, I do not see "Stale" messages in either syslog or dmesg.

Also, I su'd as the user, and I am able to access the share on the Win2k.

It appears to be an intermittent problem, as such messages have appearing on 10 different days since 1st Feb.

Side qn: How to check NFS version on Win2k?

TIA & Rgds,
Shahril

Re: SAMBA: Stale NFS file handle

Couple of things to clarify here.

1) Samba(CIFS/9000 on HP-UX) is an independent product that has NOTHING to do with NFS.

2)Windows 2000 has built into its shell a client capable of browsing shared files and printers on samba servers, be they unix or windows.

3) NFS is not built into Windows 2000, so you will need to go to control panel Add/Remove Programs and check what you have installed to obtain that information.

4) Is this error effecting reality? What I mean by that is are clients unable to read files, any erros anywhere. If not, don't worry about it.

Assuming this is affecting reality the most likely cause of this error is:

1)Network issue, wiring,hub,switch, physical issues.

2) The HP-UX server has been booted or NFS has been taken off line. This can also be caused by long periods of time with the machine unplugged from the network.

Good Luck. Someone will help you if you post some follow up data. I'll be on a road trip.
