Samba Version Issue

To all,

We have a Siebel installation and we are going to test 2.2.7 and 2.2.8 of Samba. has anyone experienced any issues with either? Or should I look at 3.0?

The database is on a cluster and the application servers are on another cluster and we interface with a Proliant cluster for the MS portion.

Any comments on security impliccations also appreciaterd.

TIA,

Chuck

Re: Samba Version Issue

Not too sure what Siebel is...

As far as Samba - go to 3...

Is your MS using ADS?

If yes - then it is fairly easy to have Samba in ADS - with the Windows doing your authentication.

For steps, see my post here:

Re: Samba Version Issue

Luk,

The systems in question are older rp74## and rp8400 boxes on 11.11i v1. Wishing I could get all the applications to agree on 11.11i v2!

Re: Samba Version Issue

Go with Samba 3x. and the HP Built one which is named HP-UX CIFS Server and fully supported by HP Techs. it is available at http://software.hp.com. The latest one is A.02.02 (which is based on Samba 3.0.14).

Your Windows masters will be very happy if you did.

Re: Samba Version Issue

Hi Chuck,

With HP CIFS Server (productized Samba) you will have full HP support. If you use opensource then you do not. For HP CIFS Server, your only supported choice is based upon Samba 3.0. The current version is A.02.02 and equates to Samba 3.0.14a, with a few HP tweaks. Pre-Samba3.0 for post-11.0 will be removed from software.hp.com in January.

The Samba team does not maintain Samba 2.2 at all. So your security question is appropriate. New threats will not be addressed in Samba 2.2.

And yes - there are issues with Samba 2.2 that cannot be resolved without going to Samba 3.0.

If you have concerns about going to Samba 3.0 versus 2.2, let me know what they are.

Re: Samba Version Issue

Shalom Chuck,

Fairly few security implications from going 2.2.7 to 2.2.8. It will not open any new holes.

Its probably not worth risking database disrutption for this upgrade.

Better to go with 3.0.x with a thorgouh test plan.
