SAMBA Version - Security patch

HP Security bulletin HPSBUX0303-251 advises to download and install smbd.11.00. I downloaded the file and did a smbd.11.00 -V to verify the version. It comes back with: Version 2.2.5. I know that the latest SAMBA is 2.2.8.

I then did a 'what smbd.11.00':
CIFS/9000 Server: Version: A.01.09.02 based on Samba version: 2.2.5.

Still not the answer that I was expecting. I also downloaded the HP-UX binary from samba.org and got the answer that I expected. ./smbd -V
version 2.2.8.

Is HP behind on their samba release?

Re: SAMBA Version - Security patch

HP is behind in samba releases.

The reason is they have to test extensively and sometimes change code to make it work right. So says the HP developer I talked to on this subject at last years HP World.

Re: SAMBA Version - Security patch

Hi,

The latest version of CIFS/9000 is A.01.09.02 which has the security fix, this version is based on Samba 2.2.5.

HP will be behind on the open source Samba release, because there are additional features (related to CIFS client amongst other things) and scripts added.

If you want to use the latest open source Samba then 2.2.8 is available from samba.org as you've found. Bear in mind that it expects config and log files in a different place to CIFS/9000, it's probably best to remove CIFS/9000 if you're going to install open source Samba to avoid confusion.

Hope this is some way towards the answer you're expecting ;)
