Screen version 3.09.15 not working...

I installed the screen 3.09.15, but when I tryied vi, it says "screen: Unknown terminal type" I checked my TERM variable, it has been set to "screen", I tried to change it back to "xterm" and it worked, but every time I start screen, it modifies the variable to "screen" again, is there any method I can set this every time the screen starts?? Thanks a lot.

you will have to create a file .screenrc and make your customizations here.
This is the startup file for the screens.
