There are a plethora of good books on Shell and Perl. Anything published by O'Reilly is more than worth its price.

I would suggest you first studying basic unix commands which might help in scripting with necessary options and then reading ksh man page, write small shell scripts and develop your scripting skills.

Later, enter into perl.

If you're interested in Perl specifically, you can really learn it on any platform you have easy access to (even Windows). The O'Reilly books are good references. I used them to teach myself what I needed to know for a couple of small CGI projects a few years back.

There may be some third-party (non-HP) certifications somewhere, but I don't know of any offhand.
