Re: SCSI disk drive does not power-up

If not powering up, are all connections OK? Does ioscan show an UNCLAIMED?
Could be that the disk drive needs replacement.

Re: SCSI disk drive does not power-up

If you have DIAGS loaded, can use stm (cstm, xstm, or mstm) to view the hardware of the system. This will provide you with more info.

Re: SCSI disk drive does not power-up

If it doesnt showup in ioscan then their is no physical connection to the drive. Either the drive has failed and not powered up, or else the connection to the drive is faulty. Have you checked the SCSI cable to the drive is nice and tight ? Try that first, or else power off the box completely and power it on again and see if it comes up. A disk powering down then up or not powering on all the time is a sure sign its on its way to disk heaven.

Re: SCSI disk drive does not power-up

The connections are ok, when i put another unused disk on that slot it works. No the ioscan does not show anything unclaimed.

Thanks

Re: SCSI disk drive does not power-up

Was this disk ever functioning with this box or is new?
Is it an external disk? If yes, check the cable, the connection (even the power-on button). Does the disk have a properly terminator?
If the disk is internal one, probable is toasted.
Follow Rick advive with diagnostics if you have them installed.

Re: SCSI disk drive does not power-up

You have a bad drive that sounds like it needs replacement.

Is this drive the same type, i.e. FWD, as the drive you just swapped in?
This could cause waht you are seeing as well.

Re: SCSI disk drive does not power-up

I tried to shutdown completely and startup, it still didnt power-up. as you say the disk must be bad and needs replacement.

yes it was the same type of disk that i swapped, is that wrong??? i thought swapping with a unused disk wouldnt cause any problems.

Thanks

Re: SCSI disk drive does not power-up

This is a internal disk. No I dont have DIAGS installed, i think i'll go with the replacement of the disk. Thanks so much to all of you for such quick response to my issue.

Re: SCSI disk drive does not power-up

You will want the same type of disk. Typically FWD disks.

All disks on the bus should be the same type as the bus is typically differential as well. If the disk is not FWD, you would not see any devicesa on the bus.

Appears the disk is bad.

Re: SCSI disk drive does not power-up

Your right, swapping disks on the fly (on a Jamaica?) and then doing an ioscan should be fine, I do it here all the time. Doesnt even have to be the same type/model/size of disk.
