Secure Data Deletion

Does anyone know what the HP recommended method is for securely deleting data from disk drives?

I have a customer who is requesting that when we retire a server, we overwrite the data on all disk drives with generic data.

There are various methods that can be used, from dd'ing overthe disc, tousing mediaint or diagnostics.
It depends on how secure you/they want the discs wiped.
It may be worthwhile taking a look at:
http://www.lat.com/
as Los Altos Technologies have a package for securely wiping disc drives.

Re: Secure Data Deletion

I have tested UniShred Pro from Los Altos Technology. While it is a very good product, it is very expensive. I believe a single overwrite will be sufficent. Other than dd are there any other tools, commands or utilities included with the OS that will provide this function?

a mediainit on the disks will erase it completely and forever. I think thats what you need.
