Semaphore in HP-UX 11.11

Guys please help me to understand what a semaphore is . How is it used.

What I understand is semaphore are used to controll a set of resources.
But which resources does it controll ..

A semaphore is a shared memory area.

It is used for interprocess communication, or communication between processes.
