sendmail error: hash map "Alias0": unsafe map file /etc/mail/aliases.db: Permission denied

I am getting this error while trying to run the newaliases command:

# /usr/sbin/newaliases
warning: cannot lock /etc/mail/aliases: Error 0
hash map "Alias0": unsafe map file /etc/mail/aliases.db: Permission denied
dbm map "Alias0": unsafe map file /etc/mail/aliases: Permission denied
WARNING: cannot open alias database /etc/mail/aliases
Cannot create database for alias file /etc/mail/aliases
root@smtmwq1:/etc/mail


installed mail Packages:

# swlist -l product | grep -i mail
MailUtilities B.11.11 User mail agents and related tools
PHNE_35950 1.0 sendmail(1M) 8.9.3 patch
# ll

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Shalom,

The first thing I'd do is visit http://software.hp.com
Search for sendmail

Download the depot.

swinstall the depot.

Then I'd re-run the test and check directory permissions.
