Sendmail Gets 554 too many hops error

What do I look for to resolve this problem? The system in question just started getting this one day. Basically it sends the message from itself, to itself via the mailhost (e.g. MAILER-DAEMON via mailhost to MAILER-DAEMON or MAILER-DAEMON via mailhost to Postmaster.

copy the aliases file from /usr/newconfig/etc/mail to replace the one in /etc/mail. That has been corrupted.
When We Seek To Discover The Best In Others, We Somehow Bring Out The Best In Ourselves.

A new aliases file didn't change anything. Could it be something in sendmail.cf or with networking? As afar as I know neither one of these has changed but I'm at a loss.
