Sendmail information(logs, smtp logs etc..)

Hello all! Merry Christmas!

My question is simple. We have 2 servers that used to send emails via smtp. We indicate what the "from address" was and it would be able to send it no problem. Now, the emails are being sent but it seems like the "from address" is being stripped. I was wondering besides the /var/adm/syslog/mail.log, if there are other logs that I can look at to find out where exactly this stripping is happening. Any help is appreciated.

Where is smtp information logged ?

Re: Sendmail information(logs, smtp logs etc..)

Hi Mark,

You can raise sendmail's log level. In the /etc/mail/sendmail.cf file adjust
O LogLevel=
value. Default is 9 & higher numbers will log more info. Then bounce sendmail for change to take effect.

Also you could start a sendmail session with
sendmail -OLogLevel=X
where X=desired log level. (You can also set a from: address on the command line with -fuser@company.com)

But note that high log levels will generate LOTS of data, so keep an eye on the mail.log size.

Rgds,
Jeff

/var/adm/syslog/mail.log

DNS requests are logged here.

/var/adm/syslog/syslog.log

To turn on detail there inetd -l
