Sendmail Problems...??

Hi. I keep getting the following errors (like each hour or so) in my /var/adm/syslog/mail.log

Dec 21 08:34:42 natux28 sendmail[29964]: IAA29964: to=, delay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, relay=janus-ssn.psc-cfp.gc.ca, stat=Transient parse error -- message queued for future delivery
Dec 21 08:34:42 natux28 sendmail[29964]: IAA29964: ruleset=check_mail, arg1=, relay=natux39.psc-cfp.gc.ca [192.168.81.1], reject=451 Sender domain must resolve
Dec 21 08:34:42 natux28 sendmail[29964]: IAA29964: from=, size=0, class=0, pri=0, nrcpts=0, proto=ESMTP, relay=natux39.psc-cfp.gc.ca [192.168.81.1]

It's first telling me that the message will be queued, but if I run 'mailq', it gives me nothing. Looked under /var/spool/mail... nothing! I first thought it was a type in the 'eilliamsehcz' name, but then again, it doesn't even reach the server 'mclaren-global.com'. That name isn't resolvable.

I can't seem to figure out where the hell this email is coming from. We've got some web sites with perl on that server... a few java apps. Majordomo, etc. I did an instance search for the name using a:

find /folder -name "*" | xargs grep -i eilliamsehcz

but nothing comes up... Any suggestions has to how to find the source of this email??

Thank you very much.

Patrick

Re: Sendmail Problems...??

Adding trace logs to the sendmail deamon would help, I have all being dumped at /var/adm/mail/logs. Only with generic information it would be too tuff to go back to the origination.

Re: Sendmail Problems...??

Hello,

a) The original message was created on, or
relayed by, server natux39.psc-cfp.gc.ca [192.168.81.1].

Since 192.168.0.0/24 is class-C private LAN,
there is little doubt that the message came from one of your internal servers (unless you
work for a large telco with mis-configured
routers - once I found 192.168.x.x server
in New Zealand that was happily connecting
to Internet without NAT).

The senders email address was eilliamsehcz@mclaren-global.com.

It is quite possible someone was testing something, or you have an application that
needs to be checked.

b) Once this message reached your server, it tried to use Smarthost janus-ssn.psc-cfp.gc.ca.

That server politely declined to relay it
further because it could not resolve domain name mclaren-global.com.

c) Check the message queue on
server janus-ssn.psc-cfp.gc.ca in the first instance.

It would be nice to know what version of Sendmail you use, if you use mailertables,
or similar tables, and other important
details of your setup so that we can help you...

PS. Out of interest, what does command mailstats show? Is your email traffic large?

Re: Sendmail Problems...??

that sounds like
1.mail is cleared from the local server and passed to the relay server/janus-ssn.psc-cfp.gc.ca. Then the mail was passed to secondory/next relay server natux39.psc-cfp.gc.ca.
Bu the destination mail server rejected the request from natux39.psc-cfp.gc.ca.
as it could not resolve Sender domain.

i would recommend to check with your mail server/exchange server guys ..

Re: Sendmail Problems...??

Shalom Patrick,

The server trying to relay the mail either can't resolve the domain name or is blocked from delivery of the mail on port 25 (SMTP).

It could be a firewall, /etc/resolv.conf or the server being asked to accept the mail is not permitting the traffic due to spam filters, the lack of a reverse IP address and other issues.

The first step if this system is actually supposed to deliver the mail is to make the name resolvable.

If that can not be done, then perhaps change sendmail to do a DS relay to a server that CAN resolve the name and deliver the mail.
