sendmail routing problem

I am trying to configure sendmail to send messages bound for a specific domain to a specific host. I have uncommented the mailertable line in sendmail.cf and created the mailertable databases with makemap, stopped and restarted sendmail.

However, when testing it with the sendmail -bv option, it goes out our internet connection instead of through the private network we have between us, which is not what our customer wants.
