Sendmail V8.9.3; /var/mail file is owned by "daemon" instead of the receiver

All files listed in /var/mail have daemon as the owner
instead of who the mail is intended for. I've looked at
all file permissions and also checked sendmail.cf, all
look correct. I also found a similar problem on the itrc:
"I am using the Sendmail application. I cannot send mail to regular user accounts. All of the mail is routed to the 'root' account." and followed the resolution of updating
sendmail.cw with the domain. Didn't resolve it. Where
else could the problem be?
