sendmail
On a k570 box running hpux 11.0, I'm getting a sendmail error: unknown mailer error 126.

Hi,
The unknown mailer error usually means that the user or process sending the mail is not recognised (trusted. Try checking the permission of all sendmail configuration/executable files.

the message refers to the actual code of 126; sendmail does not recognize that, so this is how it gets reported. restart sendmail in debug mode (man sendmail for the flag, -d I think) and then the errors will hit the mail log and perhaps shed more light on where in the process they are being generated.

not many details here.
First guesses:
1. Check for /etc/aliases or $HOME/.forward files calling a mailer not recognized in /etc/sendmail.cf ie.:
grep "mailer in aliases" /etc/sendmail.cf.
If you get no hit, there's your problem.
Otherwise it could be perms, like Shiju mentioned.
