Server requirement for MC/Service Guard

If I able to get MC/Service Guard software,
Would I be able to install on the following server? In other words is it good enough for practice purposes? If it is; then what kind of DISK ARRAY I'll be needed along with the following kind of 2 servers?

HP9000 D-CLASS D330 Server 160MHz/512MB/14GB/DDS2

A3578A HP 9000/D330
One 160MHz PA-RISC 7300LC Processor
512 MB RAM
64 KB Data Cache
64 KB Instructions Cache
1MB Additional Cache
DDS2 Tape Drive
14GB HDs (2X4.2 GB + 3X2.0 GB)
HSC FWD SCSI ADAPTER A2874-66005
Single-Ended SCSI-2 External Port
Remote Management Port
IEEE 802.3 Integrated LAN Port

Re: Server requirement for MC/Service Guard

Hi,

Fist of all under MC/SG its is better to have the disks in shared bus than allocating all to one system. So instead of having 14GB just for one system have only 2x4.2GB internal disks with both the systems.
2. Go for 2xFWD SCSI adapters for Redudency and as you are going for a SCSI adapter you can go for even HA Boxes. They have 10 Disks in one. Or any J-Boards will do.

Re: Server requirement for MC/Service Guard

Hi,
You should have some disks which can be shared across the 2 systems. this enables you to move the package in between the systems.
You can consider either HASS box (JBOD) of 1o HDD or an AutoRaid 12H od 12 Disks.
You already have a HSC FWD SCSI ADAPTER A2874-66005 . Better you can buy 2 more for configuring alternate path.
AS for as Heart beat is concerned you can use Serail port and 1 network card which is already there. If you want redundant link for your lan you can buy 2 more NIC Cards.
The hardware whatever I mentioned should be sufficient , You need to buy only the software.

Re: Server requirement for MC/Service Guard

If you read the manuals and Release Notes available at
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/ha you will be able to see what systems are supported, and also how you need ot connect your storage to allow you to have a cluster.

Re: Server requirement for MC/Service Guard

Hi,
Basically all you guys are saying that D-330 does cover the requirement to install MC/Service Guard with the above given discription ???
All I need is disk array for redundancy; for that I need 2 more (HSC FWD SCSI ADAPTER A2874-66005)??? But doesn't it come with (HSC FWD SCSI ADAPTER A2874-66005) or it is only for internal use ???
Can I also use the same network card already in the saystem...

I m just kind of confused to start up with, but you guys are really helping me to take a initial step. Thanks a alot for all your effort guys. will be waiting for response.

Re: Server requirement for MC/Service Guard

Hi,

You posted a duplicate message sometime back in two categories. I replied to one in serviceguard category and I don't find it anymore. I mentioned about the minimum requirements to setup a serviceguard cluster.

1. Lock disk. This should be shared across two servers. You can use your FW cards. However, you will need to make sure the scsi ids are unique in the chain.
2. Heartbeats. Either two heartbeat lans or one heartbeat and the other serial (not recommended).

Mirroring, Alternate links and redundant powersupplies are additional requirements to serviceguard to achieve high availability on production systems. In a nutshell, there should not be any single point of failure otherwise the purpose of serviceguard will not be served. But they are not necessary to setup serviceguard.

See if you can get a Jamaica Disk array. They are outdated so should get it for a low cost. It may give some approximation of how a serviceguard cluster may look like.

Re: Server requirement for MC/Service Guard

I was in a HP class where they used D class servers for MCSG. I would have to say they work!
