we are using HP UPS manager II to protect servers. there will be a planed power maintenance in the building this weekend, just to be safe, we will shutdown all servers ahead of time, instead of letting ups manager do so when it detect power off. We will issue "shutdown -h" command on all servers, but NOT turn off the switch on servers.
what I'm concerning is, since there will be no load on the ups while power goes off, so the battery will remain full voltage, and when power restored, will it automatically start server anyway (even the battery is not dry)?
thanks,
Gary

Re: server restarted by UPS manager automatically while power restored
Are you saying you don't want the UPS to restart the servers? If so, just turn off the UPS.

Re: server restarted by UPS manager automatically while power restored
Just the opposite, I want the ups to start the server automatically so that I don't have to be there during weeked. But somebody said, if the battery is full, the UPS won't restart the server....

Re: server restarted by UPS manager automatically while power restored
I'm not sure how it would work with UPS Mgr II (I use ups_mond, myself). I do have a manual here and will do some research after lunch to see if I can find anything for you.

SolutionCuriosity got me and I delayed lunch until I could review the UPS Mgr II manual. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any reference to how power restoration is handled. I know that with ups_mond, there is a ups_conf parameter called "kill_after_shutdown" which specifies whether the UPS is to come back on or not - the default is for the UPS to come back on. I would hope that this would be the case for UPS Mgr II, as well, but can't confirm. Maybe someone else can.

Re: server restarted by UPS manager automatically while power restored
1) If the AC power is restored before shutdown starts (shutdown delay), system will not shutdown.
2) If AC power is not restored with in that time, shutdown will start.
3) If AC power comes back during shutdown, the shutdown will complete, UPS will check and make sure that the AC power is restored and then will reboot the server.
4) If the AC power doesn't come during or after shutdown, the UPS will shut itself OFF (shutdown timeout value). If AC power comes back before time out value, the server will be rebooted by UPS.
5) If AC power does not come back at all during all these time, but comes back later, you need to *manually* restore the AC power to UPS inorder to reboot the server.
I think #5 is your situation!
