Serverlet calls to oracle not working

We are running iplanet on hpux 11.0 and are having a problem getting the serverlets to load data from the oracle database(8.1.7). We have proper configuration in the database as iplanet on a "Sun box" works but we want it on HP. We tried to run via an external jre but this was worse. Our serverlets will load and start they just do not connect to the database and bring back the data. Can someone give me an idea of where to check.
