setting max flat file size

I am running a conversion utility that outputs to flat file. My max file size is sitting around 2.5MB right now and I need it to be around 5MB. I thought this was a configurable kernel paramete but am not having luck finding it. It is also a bad day so my brain may not be firing properly. Thanks for the assistance.

Re: setting max flat file size

You can turn on "quota" for a specific user on a specific file system

See "man edquota" for more

Re: setting max flat file size

Hi Ted,

Is the flat file having more than one line, or is it limited to a single line. If it is more than one line, i do not think there should have been any problem in your creating files more than 2.5MB unless some specific restrictions have been place onto your account. Now-a-days we create files in GB's. You can look at the ulimit parameter. Check your ulimit parameters using "ulimit -a".

If you need to reset the parameter use the ulimit command. Do "man ulimit" for more help on ulimit.

Try ulimit -f unlimited and then recreating the file.

Hope this helps.

Re: setting max flat file size

In my system exist in tunable parameters "ulimit".
This parameter is the size of the largest file write (in blk of 512 kb).

Re: setting max flat file size

Because this is such a tiny (by today's standards although back when UNIX was young and dinisaurs roamed the planet, 2MB was a very common default ulimit) I rather doubt that ulimit (check via ulimit -a) or quotas (check via quota -v ) are coming into play. Instead, I suspect that this is a restriction imposed by your conversion utility -- possibly in a configuration file. By the way, UNIX wouldn't know a flat file if one bit it on the butt. A file's underlying structure -- with the exception of executables -- is solely the responsibility of the application accessing the file.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: setting max flat file size

I apologize for the mistype earlier. It has been a long week. The file size in question is 2GB and I need 5GB. I noticed this evening that the FS was HFS. Given that the program is kicking at 2GB, I assume that it was not set up with long file names option. Is there a command to run against the file system that can verify this setting?

Re: setting max flat file size

To be able to have a file larger than 2GB, you must set the 'largefiles' option for the filesystem.

See this doc for max file sizes:

Re: setting max flat file size

Hi,
By default HFS supports maximum filesize of 2GB. To enable the FS for largefiles more than 2GB . Issue the below command for the FS. Then it can store more than 2GB file size. It can be done online.

#fsadm -F hfs -o largefiles /dev/$VG/$lvol
