setting up a modem on a pci_mux card

I have an L-class rp5400 running HP-UX 11i with a pci_mux adapter PN A6748A that I am trying to get ot work with a US Robitics 56k modem. I have setup ports on the mux adapter and have the HP special cable for the modem PN J3830A. But when I try to connect to the modem I get a connect statement but the TR light does not come on. I have a getty process running on that port so that when I plug the modem into the port it should bring the TR light on but nothing.
When I do a
--> cu -l /dev/cul1a2 -m dir
I get CONNECTED but I not sure what I am connected to.

If anyone can give me some help it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: setting up a modem on a pci_mux card

Once you get connected try:

atq0

you should get an "Ok" or at least a return (blank line).

Then try "at&r"

it should return a lot of modem settings.

Re: setting up a modem on a pci_mux card

Is it something simple like echo being turned off?
ATE1
OK
Then get the settings:
ATi1
ATi2
ATi3
ATi4
ATi5
Plus all the earlier commands suggested above.

Maybe if you temporarily disable the getty you will have more luck with cu.

I take it that to get as far as you have, you have already added a line in /usr/lib/uucp/Devices for the direct connection.
I also had trouble with an ISDN modem through that cable type to an L class and I think it was also the TR light.
Recheck you have the correct cable and the list of supported modems for that cable.
Lastly have you considered checking settings in the GSP for the serial card? Might be a red herring, might not.
Good luck.

Re: setting up a modem on a pci_mux card

this is the commenad that I am issueing and what I get:

--> cu -l/dev/cul1a2 -m dir
CONNECTED

When I type in any AT commands they do not show on the screen I get nothing. I am able to do a ~. to disconect but that is it. Not sure if has something to do with GSP or not.

Re: setting up a modem on a pci_mux card

HI David

Do AT&E1 to get the local echo on , or try AT&F0 to restore to factory defaults ,check for AT Command Set and try to dial like

ATDT < PHONE NO>
or ATDP < PHONE NO> depending on whehter it is tone or pulse.

You can get the AT command set from the manual of the modem or try google.

Re: setting up a modem on a pci_mux card

Its a bit late, but you could also try the following Cables. I had problems getting the DB25 Converter (RJ45 to 25Pin) connected to a multitech modem.

See if you can get a hold of a 40233A Cable First and then a 92219Q Cable.

I am not entirely sure about which cross overs you should use but HP can tell you what the Cross over should be if you wanted to make one up.
