Setting up MC/SG on not-like servers ???

Another question I have is can we setup MC/SG on and L class and an K class server ?

Obviously, we would like to have them both being the same, but since we have this K580 sitting there, it could be the backup to the L class server, which is replacing the K580 on ou 24x7x365 environment.

If we can, what are the issues that we have to look for, besides the differennce on the hardware, performance, etc ? Keep in mind that we ARE using the K580 for production right now. It is a bit slow, and that is why is beeing replaced, BUT, if it can do the job in case the L class goes does for a few hours, it will save us lots of head aches.

Cheers,

Hi Henrique,

You can mix the hardware models. The only thing you should be concerned about the numbers of io channels and the lan ports that you are going to use for sg configuration, the ones you are going to share between systems. Otherwise it is okay to mix different type of hardware.

Hope this helps.

Re: Setting up MC/SG on not-like servers ???

Hi:

There is no problem mixing and matching as long as you remember that all external SCSI connections on your K-box are HVD; those on a L-box, unless you ordered the correct SCSI adapters, are LVD. You must not mix and match these as smoke is generally considered to be a bad thing.

The other thing to bear in mind is that if you are running Oracle, for example, and your L-box has many more
resources than your K-box, you need to decide if you want to have two separate init.ora's to take full advantage of the resources of the more powerful box while allowing you to 'limp' along on the less powerful box. I try to avoid that scenario and make a single init.ora that is a good compromise between the two. While I used Oracle an example, the same would apply to any number of packages.

Re: Setting up MC/SG on not-like servers ???

So, if I understand correctly, as long as we have the correct access to the storage, either being FC60s or an XP SAN, the ONLY thing that we should worry about here is the performance issue from going to the L to the K box.

Keep in mind that the apps are ALL the same, and the only thing that changes is the OS environemnt.

Also, are you guys aware of any issues with Service Guard and XP SANs ???? We will probably migrate this data from the FC60 space hogs on teh data server to the massive XP servers that are more reliable, better performance, redundancy, etc,etc !!!

Thanks,

Henrique

Re: Setting up MC/SG on not-like servers ???

Yes, that is correct. The main problem is that it may kill your DBA's to not be able to use those extra 4 GB's of memory in their SGA's because it must also run on your smaller box. It's possible to have your packages adapt to the environment on the fly but that is generally asking for trouble.
