Shareware backup software?

Is there any shareware backup software that can utilise the robtics on a 20/700 dlt tape silo that runs on hpux?

I do have a old version of omniback somewhere that we used to use, but i dont relish trying to get it up and running, especially if a cant find the licenses for it.

We are moving to veritas and new tape silos for our production servers.

But i would like to get something automated setup for my development servers with what i have lying about and without any expense apart from time.

You might look at AMANDA:

http://www.amanda.org/

This seems to offer limited support for tape changes, without explicitly mentioning the 20/700 (OEM'd StorageTek L700)

Re: Shareware backup software?

Just remember that you get what you pay for.

Amanda is ok, and I have used it for demo purposes but it is not supported by anyone, and has limited support for devices. It is not very easy to configure, maintain, or change down the road.

Don't like Omniback? Tivoli, Networker, and Netbackup are all valid alternatives.

I find that dev boxes tend to be just as important as production at least in disaster recovery.

Best of luck.

Re: Shareware backup software?

My budget for this is non existant.

I have to make do with what i can blag or cobble together.

I have my 8 main servers covered by veritas netbackup and a nice new neo store tape library.

i just need to make sure i have something usable for everything else thats non essential.

Since my 20/700 tape silo isnt under warranty it doesnt really matter if i dont get support for the backup software.

It's all just best effort!

Re: Shareware backup software?

If I might throw in a recomendation, then it would be bacula (http://www.bacula.org).

I played with both amanda an bacula and really have come to find the latter far more professional in both design and documentation.

Contact me, if You wish, or simply give it a try.

also, there surely is a mtx port for hp-ux floating around somewhere.

Re: Shareware backup software?

Do you know if this can use the storageteks robotics and barcodes on the tapes?

Re: Shareware backup software?

It *should* work with the STK, but I don't have one myself - I only have two smaller ones (Seagate DDS/ADIC DLT).

A test program is included, which is quite easy to get running.

Barcodes work :)

Re: Shareware backup software?

I've taken a look at Bacula but there seems to have been issue's getting it to work on HPUX.

I couldnt see if there was a stable port where you didnt have major hassle installing and getting it up and running.

Re: Shareware backup software?

(I'm aware this thread is quite dead, but)

For the sake of completeness, I have made some bacula binaries available at
http://deranfangvomen.de/~floh/bacula/

They're for HP-UX and others, HP-UX in most versions (11.00,11.11,11.23) and they're working quite well by now.
