Sharp AR-M620N won't print in HP-UX.

Dear All,
I have Sharp AR-M620N printer, which if configured onto HP-UX server, it won't print.
I have tried everything I can. Can anyone comeback on this. Is it that there are no drivers available for them, or anything else.

Thanks,
Sarwar.

Re: Sharp AR-M620N won't print in HP-UX.

You will need to set this up as a "Remote" printer using the hostname of the printer.

These things have a parallel port as well so your least evil approach will be to connect an external JetDirect to the parallel port. You can then set this up as a "Network" printer and have far greater control over the printer.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

I have configured it as a printer connected to the Network, and its having an Ip address.
But the problem is that, it is not printing.
Could you suggest some interface script which is close to this printer, and supports it on hp-ux.

Thanks,
Sarwar.

Re: Sharp AR-M620N won't print in HP-UX.

There are no drivers in UNIX for any printers. That concept belongs to another OS. If you are going to use this thing directly as a printer then your must set it up as a "REMOTE" printer which requires a hostname AND the internal name of the print queue (e.g. TEXT,BINARY,RAW,...). This internal queue name should be listed in your documentation. REMOTE printers use the LPR/LPD protocol but you have very limited control over these under HP-UX.

The other approach (and the one you will find to be less painful) is to use an External JetDirect to attach to the parallel port. It's ok for PC's to use the existing printer network connection and for your UNIX box to use the JetDirect connection. This will now be a NETWORK printer and you have much greater choices in the interface files that you can use.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Hi Stephenson,

Thanks for your help, well the printer is not printing postscript files, generated from Oracle. Please suggest.

Thanks
Sarwar.

Re: Sharp AR-M620N won't print in HP-UX.

Are you able to print text files? Is this a Network or Remote printer? Is this is a Remote printer, are you sending the postscript data as raw? You should be telling me this stuff rather than me having to ask you for it.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Sharp AR-M620N won't print in HP-UX.

I am sorry for not providing complete information. Well the printer is now configured as a Network Printer, and the postcript files are being generated from some Oracle application. I am not sending them as RAW.

Thanks,
Sarwar.

Re: Sharp AR-M620N won't print in HP-UX.

A "Network" printer in HP-UX means that you are using port 9100 (by default) and using the JetDirect protocol. What model script are you using? You can run hppi -> 1) Spooler Administration -> 3) Modify exeisting spooler queue to see the model script and then 'q' to quit without changes.

Depending upon the model script in use, you need to do something like this:

lp -dmyprinter -o postscript myfile.ps
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
