shutdown with 3 UPS

How to shutdown server (rp5470) which have 3 power supplies (2 required, 3rd - redundant) attached to independent UPS (APC)? Shutdown is needed only if power failed on 2 or more UPS simultaneously.

Re: shutdown with 3 UPS

Hi,

in rp5470 2 power supplies are must to run the machine, 3rd one is redundant. If any one of the 2 fails, you can use the 3rd one. if both fails machine wouldn't run.
If the power fails on 2 power supplies machine will shutdown itself.

Re: shutdown with 3 UPS

Oleg,

You can use ups_mond with multiple UPS's. Put each of the tty's in the ups_conf file. See man ups_mond and man ups_conf for more information.

Re: shutdown with 3 UPS

Oleg,
You're kind of confusing the situation. You keep using power supply and UPS interchangably.

If two of your power supplies on the server fail, the server will shut itself down. No intervention required from the UPS.

If there is a power failure, you have no power to the UPS, the UPS can communicate with the server and force a shutdown. APC does this with their software called PowerChute. I've used it and it works very nicely.

Your UPS will not know or even care if your server has a failed power supply.

Re: shutdown with 3 UPS

Interesting. I was told by an HP engineer that the system could run on one power supply, but needed two to boot.

Of course I NOW don't think he was correct because I can't find any supporting documenation to back his claim.

Can I go home now? Now that I have learnt sum-ting neu ??

Re: shutdown with 3 UPS

APC has two solutions -
The first is the powerchute software that will control one ups from one server through one of your serial ports on the 9000.

The second is a network card that is optional, but when placed in the APC ups, can shutdown multiple servers.

You, however have 2 ups's. Is it logical that when you lose power to one, that you will lose power to both? If so, then solution one (and a one to one ) shutdown will work.

Powerchute runs on HPUX 10.20 and 11.00

Re: shutdown with 3 UPS

That's the problem. We have a data center with 3 independant power sources. IT sounds like e has the same sort of situation. We only use 2 power sources, and the 3rd backs the other 2 up. I would try Pete's post...
