Silent installation of OS in VM guest

Hello, I need to install the operating system (HP-UX) on a VM guest in a complete unattended way, i.e. without any command or selection done using the VM console.
I have IVM 2.0 on HP 11.23; I want to use Ignite for the installation of the OS.
I need this "silent" installation because it will be launched embdedded in a provisioning application, from a remote machine.

Thanks a lot for your support

Re: Silent installation of OS in VM guest

You need to setup and configure ignite server to do this.
see http://docs.hp.com/en/IUX -> Admin Guide

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Silent installation of OS in VM guest

Refer the Ignite-UX setup and configuration for IVM at

http://docs.hp.com/en/7947/UsingIgniteWithHPVMmay05.pdf

Set the required boot kernel configuration defaults using "instl_adm" as given in the IG-UX admin guide under "Automating Installations" chapter.

Re: Silent installation of OS in VM guest

Hello,
thanks for your answer.
I read the documentation and I found out in the WP about Ignite-UX and IVM, that the user has to choose on the vm guest console between the EFI shell and the Boot option maintenance menu.
I have to install the guest OS using a script and I would like to know if it possible to include in -c flag of the command hpvmconsole this choice because I do want each interaction on VM console only using -c flag).

Any idea about it? Thanks

Re: Silent installation of OS in VM guest

I think a possible workaround is to clone a "template" guest and boot it. In this way the installation is completely unattempted.

Re: Silent installation of OS in VM guest

The "hpvmclone" command will "clone" the Integrity VM guest to a new config, but it is still using the same storage resources!

Based on this I cannot imagine any advantage related to the OS installation by using the "clone" command.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Silent installation of OS in VM guest

Hi Torsten,
the dd of the disk and the cloning are executed together with the detach of the source disk, the attach of the copied disk, and the configuration of the lan.
The machine source has installed only the OS; the applications installation is performed later.
