In HP 9000 "Shutdown" command get system into single user mode i didn't try it on itanium.

second way
press any key in 10 seconds comes on screen after restart system .press key and than at prompt apply command
hpux -ls

These are the steps to go to single user mode in itanium.
1.Reboot the machine
2.Press any key when you see the following message "Press Any Key to interrupt Autoboot "
3.type "boot vmunix" on <\EFI\HPUX\AUTO> prompt
4.type "boot -is" on
