Re: Sizing of systems

Bart,

"size" is kind of one of those things, that is subjective..

Considerations include:
1. What "apps" are you going to be running.
2. # of users
3. Databases

My N-Class was original a dual CPU with 3GB of RAM. I've upgraded it to Quad CPUS and 7GB of RAM. Disk Space constraints need to consider the following:

base OS, logs, temporary files, database sizes and projected growth.

Our base OS is on a mirror pair of 18GB drives, databases are on dual SC10 external drive arrays. containing about 400gb of Disk.

Do not undersize your base, logs build.. it's important to make sure once you have your OS installed to "tune" your kernel effectively for Memory, CPU and Disk.. if this is going to be a new system and you've not touched UX or Un*x before get several good Un*x books, go to a systems admin and advance systems admin class for the OS you are considering.

HP-UX is probably one of the better UX's I've used over 15 yrs of admining Un&x..

Also, the support you get from HP is heads and tails above the rest. The guys that inhabit the ITRC forums have save my butt on more then one occasion.. I've used AIX on IBM, DG-UX, SunOS, Linux, and HP. Linux is Open Source, and many resources are available on the web.. SunOS is questionable for me, the experience I've had with Sun support sucked, (even with a support contract).. AIX is somewhat better,

HP-UX is scalable. Support contract is a must. expensive but an ass saver.

Re: Sizing of systems

Hello Zokahn

System sizing totally depends on intended use.

Tell us what apps you want to run, how many records or how big the database is and someone will make good recommendations to you.

Sometimes, size matters.

Re: Sizing of systems

Hi,

How can u compare and Intel system with a PA RISC system or intergirty system. Post your exact requirements, so that we will be in a better posistion to help u.

Include the followings in your reply

What's the apps u r going to host, how many users are going to connect to this, is the app is server based or client based. If it is a DB what is size, how many users, expected hit on the DB ..etc..

Re: Sizing of systems

Thanks for the replies!

The system that i'm thinking about right now should run a pretty hefty setup of OpenView (NNM & OVO), Oracle and serve as xwindows server for 10-15 clients.

The network has about 1000-1500 devices, routers, switches and server win/unix. Above all it should have space to grow we could end up with a double number of systems and users. Applications should start and respond fast.

But still if i'm helped with this system im still in the dark about others, don't give a man a fish, learn him fishing.

I'm looking for pointers on how to scale the HP-UX range of systems.

Regards,
Bart
p.s. I'm also impressed with HP service!

Re: Sizing of systems

Hi!

In my search for sizing and comparing i've found an article over at serverwatch that does almost what I need. a 10.000 feet view on HP servers:
